Reverse osmosis water purification: What it is, how does it work, and why do I need it?
Reverse osmosis is regarded as the best, most effective home-use water filtration system on the market. This method is the same process, with the same type of system, that bottled water manufacturer’s use.
Water filtration systems that do not use reverse osmosis are much less effective.  The filters used on these systems do not include the membrane filter, only a filter that only removes pollutants with a large particle size. The filters take out chunky particles, while undesirable contaminants that are fine or dissolved are left behind in the water. Obviously, reverse osmosis water filtration produces the safest, best quality drinking water.

A reverse osmosis water purification system is series of filters that connect to provide nearly 100% pure water.  Reverse osmosis gets 95-98% of the bad stuff out of the water, while RO+DI gets virtually 100%.

What is the science behind reverse osmosis?

A very simple description of how reverse osmosis works in the situation of water filtration is an over-simplification.  However, the best way to explain RO is that it occurs when water is forced through a semi-permeable membrane at high pressure, thus removing tiny particles and pollutants in the water. The water is then considered “demineralized.”

Where do I put the Aqua-Safe Maximus II water filtration system in my home?

The system is often installed under the sink with a special faucet installed near the primary faucet, but it can be located elsewhere. Reverse osmosis (also called RO) stops almost every contaminant that tries to make it through to your glass via your tap water. The RO system forces water first through a pre-filter that is the size of a flashlight. The water flows through this pre-filter which removes sediment, and then passes through a membrane that screens out even the smallest of pollutants. One last cleaning sweep of the water through the carbon filter takes care of any remaining dangerous particles, delivering crystal clear drinking water to your specially designated filtered water faucet.

De-Ionization (DI): What it is, and why do I need it?

With a reverse osmosis system about 95% of the TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) in the source water are removed. For ultra-pure water with a TDS level at or near zero, the Aqua-Safe Maximus II includes DI processing, which when paired with the RO membrane and the pre and post filters, provides complete water purification.

After water passes through the RO membrane, it goes through the DI process, which involves multi-layered, mixed-bed deionization cartridges. In the DI process, even difficult-to-remove contaminants are brought to nearly undetectable levels. A DI cartridge has resin beds of positively and negatively charged polymers which attract the contaminants when water runs over them, and chemically remove them from the water. The result is ultra-pristine water that is very low in pollutants and chemicals.

The pre-filter has coconut in it? How does that work?!?
The carbon pre-filter in the Aqua-Safe Maximus II contains highly effective carbon derived from coconut shells. The shells were converted to pure carbon using a special process that gave it the ability to absorb organics, chromates, sulfides and chlorine.  The coconut shell carbon is also used to filter out nitric acid, peroxides, and other strong elements from the water.
