The PC Final filter is for taste. It is processing purified water and only needs to be changed every other time. This will give you 6 complete filter changes ...enough for 3 years of use at 2-3 GPD.

What is average??? E-Z answer 2-3 GPD = 12 months and 4-6GPD = 6 months.

The membranes in reverse osmosis systems must be protected. The more the feed water is filtered and conditioned prior to being purified, the better. Our pre-filter configuration is a high capacity 5-micron sedimentary filter, followed by a high capacity  granular activated coconut carbon filter and then a high capacity coconut carbon block filter.  Almost all of the chlorine and many other chemicals are removed by this pre-filtration. You actually have pretty drinkable water at this point. The RO water is then given one more treatment for dissolved gases at the PC filter.

The water that is  purified by the RO membrane is really drinkable purified water. However, there are still too many bad things left for many varieties of fish and other reef life.....remember they breath it! These marine animals evolved in an environment totally free of many of the trace elements and compounds that constitute the 4-5% that get through the hyper-filtration that is reverse-osmosis and, in many species, that is too much.

The DIs last widely different lives depending on the TDS of the post RO water. You need either color changing beads of a TDS meter to know when it is dead. As a very rough guide line the tiny  6 ounce DI filters sold by FD and WFD will last 2-3 months and the AQUA 16 ounce DI will last 5-7 months.

The way to tell if the filters are clogged and need replacing is with the PSI meter. The TDS and PSI meters are inexpensive investments to ensure your family's health.
